Atleta estadounidense. Descendiente de los sioux oglala, Mills pasó su infancia en una reserva india en Pine Ridge, y quedó huérfano a los 12 años de edad. En la Universidad de Kansas destacó en atletismo. Fue el primer estadounidense que ganó una medalla de oro olímpica en la carrera de 10.000 m (1964), en una electrizante e inesperada victoria sobre el australiano Ron Clarke. En 1965 logró el récord mundial al aire libre de los 9,5 km (6 mi) y los récords estadounidenses de 10.000 m y de 4,8 km (3 mi) (esta última bajo techo).
